Boards für Beirut

We are the initiative "Vivaconcrete" and we’re collecting money for friends in the Beirut.

At the same time, we are collecting skateboard parts in good or new condition to pass onto wider Beirut skate scene.

THE SITUATION:

Lebanon and Beirut are currently experiencing one of their worst crises since the 2nd Lebanese War of 2006.

Since October 2019, people have been taking to the streets to demonstrate against an unacceptable tax increase and the government's inability to handle the situation.

COVID-19 has also caused devastating economic problems in Lebanon.

A recent explosion destroyed much of Beirut’s port and has led to the resignation of the entire cabinet of Prime Minister Hassan Diab.

As such, the country is more or less staggering through the crisis.

Lebanon is a small country with little agriculture. It imports a large part of the basic goods that people need for survival. Many of these things came into the country via the port of Beirut, which was one of the largest in the country and the wider region.

All these events and developments have led to a dramatic increase in the cost of living. Imported food and non-alcoholic beverages cost 250% more than they did six months ago, while the value of the Lebanese pound has fallen by more than 86% since October 2019.

In terms of skateboards, a complete that cost €150 eight months ago now costs the equivalent of €500.

Therefore we call on support for the Lebanese people!

You may be wonderin: why skateboards and why now of all times?

Skateboarding is one of the few outlets that young people in Beirut have for mental and physical health. While there isn’t a lack of public places for sports in Beirut, While there isn’t a lack of public places for sports in Beirut, the city is so densely populated that it is difficult for a group of friends to go skateboarding somewhere for free.

Since the skateboarding scene in Beirut is only about 15 years old, it not too large, but it has grown due to the Coronavirus leading to so much more free time for people. Unfortunately, skateboards are both scarce and expensive—they are a luxury for many people.

We believe that it is important to act now to welcome Beirut’s skateboarding newcomers into the scene, because it is a healthy community and escape for the young people frustrated by the situation.

The Beirut skate scene has long deserved support from the broader skateboarder community and we hope that the recent events and current crisis can help us make that reality.

We’re also making moves now because through a connection, a major airline has agreed to ship any skateboards, trucks, wheels etc., that we collect free of charge from Europe to Beirut.

The money will be used in the following ways to support the reconstruction and growth of the Beirut skate scene:

- Financing the makeshift repairs of destroyed rooms/homes/stores of friends behind the Beirut skate scene

- Paying for the shipping of skateboard parts donated by friendly people to our hub in Germany before they go to Lebanon

 - Establishing a so-called "Loaner Program" in Beirut, so that new skaters can borrow skateboards and pads for free

Zu den aktuellen Geschehnissen:

Der Libanon, bzw. Beirut, durchlebt gerade eine der wohl schwersten Kriesen seit dem zweiten Libanon Krieg im Jahre 2006.

Seit Oktober 2019 gehen die Menschen auf die Straße um gegen die unzumutbaren Steuererhöhungen und das Unvermögen der Regierung zu demonstrieren.

COVID-19 hat auch im Libanon für verherende wirtschaftliche Probleme gesorgt.

Die Explosion im Hafen Beiruts hat nun dazu geführt, dass das komplette Kabinett um Premierminister Hassan Diab zurückgetreten ist und das Land mehr oder weniger kopflos durch die Krise taumelt.

Der Libanon ist ein kleines Land mit wenig eigener Landwirtschaft und importiert einen Großteil der Güter die zum Überleben benötigt werden. Viele diese Güter kamen über den Hafen Beiruts ins Land. Der Hafen war der Größte des Landes und einer der Größten in der Region.

All diese Ereignisse und Entwicklung führten zu einem drastischen Anstieg der Lebenserhaltungskosten während der Libanesische Pfund seit Oktober um mehr als 86% an Wert verloren hat. Innerhalb von einem halben Jahr kosten importierte Nahrung und nicht-alkoholische Getränke 250% mehr.

Am Beispiel von Skateboards bedeutet dies: Ein Skateboard kostet anstatt 150€ auf einmal 500€ und das innerhalb von 8 Monaten.

Viele Menschen haben an der Stelle den Gedanken, warum Skateboards und warum genau jetzt?

Skateboarding ist eine der wenigen Möglichkeiten etwas für die geistige und körperliche Gesundheit vieler junger Menschen in Beirut zu tun. Wo bei es bei uns selten an öffentlichen Plätzen für sportliche Aktivitäten mangelt, ist es im dicht besiedelten Beirut deutlich schwieriger, umsonst und in großer Gruppe eben Jene auszuüben.

Die Skateboardszene in Beirut ist überschaubar und gute 15 Jahre alt, hat jedoch durch COVID-19 und die damit einhergehende Freizeit Zuwachs bekommen. Leider sind Skateboards knapp, wie gesagt nicht günstig, und damit absolutes Luxusgut.

Unserer Meinung nach ist es wichtig genau jetzt zu Handeln und diese Menschen in die Szene zu integrieren, da diese ein Auffangbecken für viele junge, von der Situation gefrusteten, Menschen ist.

Kurz: Skateboarding - connecting people

Zusätzlich hat sich eine große Fluglinie bereit erklärt unentgeltlich die von uns gesammelten Skateboards, Achsen, Rollen etc. aus Europa nach Beirut zu verschicken.

Deswegen rufen wir auf das libanesische Volk zu unterstützen!

Das Geld kommt an verschiedensten Stellen zum Einsatz:

- Finanzierung der notdürftigen Instandsetzung zerstörter Zimmer/Gebäude unserer Freunde

- Erhalt und Wiederaufbau der Beiruter Skateszene

- Portokosten für Skateboardhardware die von freundlichen Menschen gespendet wurde

- Unterstützung der einzigen Skateboardcompany Libanons Extinct Skateboards -> https://www.instagram.com/extinctskateboards

- Gründung eines sogenannten ,,Loaner Programs”, damit sich Menschen ohne finanzielle Miete Boards/Schoner ausleihen und skaten können
