In Brazil, 15 percent of the population - 31 million people - are affected by hunger. Almost 60 percent have irregular and insufficient access to food. With the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the situation has steadily worsened. We support social movement and political education projects in Rio de Janeiro in assembling and distributing packages to cover basic daily needs (known in Brazil as 'cestas básicas'). The three supported groups (Museu Vivo do São Bento, AGANIM - Association for LGBT Rights and Fórum Grita Baixada) operate in Rio's periphery, the Baixada Fluminense.

Background

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the situation in Brazil has worsened in social, economic and political terms – not least due to the disastrous policies of the Jair Bolsonaro government. Those most affected include people in the urban peripheries, who have lost both formal and informal opportunities to earn money. The health system is also overburdened in many places. The situation is exacerbated by massive inflation and price increases, which mean that even basic foodstuffs are often no longer affordable.

Since March 2020, various groups have begun to provide people in particularly difficult economic situations with what are known in Brazil as 'cestas básicas'. These are packages to secure basic needs, containing mainly food and hygiene articles. One package contains goods worth 30€ to provide a household of four with the basic necessities for one week.

We would like to support the three groups presented in detail below (Museu Vivo do São Bento, AGANIM - Association for LGBT Rights and Fórum Grita Baixada) in distributing the packages but also in their further work in the fields of political education and advocacy for social justice. Your help will go directly and equally to these groups.

The Baixada Fluminense

For several years now, we have been following the developments especially in Rio de Janeiro's peripheries, from where we repeatedly receive calls for support. This is especially true for the Baixada Fluminense north of Rio, where about three million people live. In this sprawling part of Rio's wider metropolitan region, the inequalities and power relations that emerged in the aftermath of the colonial plantation economy and in the wake of the last bourgeois-military dictatorship are particularly evident.[1]

While a small - mostly white - elite owns land, means of production and housing, the predominantly black majority is forced to try to secure their own survival through precarious work and self-organisation. This is made more difficult by heavily armed state, parapolice and illegal trafficking groups, which often collaborate closely with local political and economic actors and terrorise local communities.[2] In the meantime, even parts of the health system or the administration of communal housing are involved in the criminal networks of the parapolice groups known as militias.

Together with the following projects we have developed this fundraising campaign:

Museu Vivo do São Bento

The museum has been working on the colonial history of the region for more than 20 years. As a ‘living museum’ (museu vivo), it is also a space for discussing current socio-ecological conflicts. The museum is a meeting place for local residents who are fighting against the destructive consequences of a nearby oil platform, against the forgetting of the victims of violent paramilitary attacks against the population and for their right to adequate housing.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the museum has had to stop some of its regular activities. However, together with residents of São Bento, the employees organise the compilation and distribution of the cestas básicas to support the residents of the neighbouring communities, some of whom have become unemployed.

AGANIM - Association for LGBT Rights

The initiative was founded in 1988 in the workers' district of Juscelino in the city of Nova Iguaçu (in the now independent city of Mesquita). The self-description states:

The group, which operates in different municipalities of the Baixada region, aims to ensure a balance between its STD/AIDS prevention activities and building a culture of defending rights and respect for diversity. Heterogeneity and plurality are thereby affirmed as values of our society.[4]

AGANIM is now a registered non-profit association. Its current fields of activity include: activities around the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and SARS-CoV-2; running soup kitchens; organising wheelchair and walking aid donations; and distributing food, hygiene items, cestas básicas and prevention kits.

In addition, AGANIM has been an important social and political platform for the peripheralised LGBTIQ+ communities in the Baixada Fluminense for many years. Its co-founder Neno Ferreira, together with five other activists, received the 'Award for Citizenship, Respect and the Right to Diversity' from the Rio de Janeiro State Legislative Assembly in June 2021 – against all odds from the right-wing faction.

Fórum Grita Baixada

The Fórum Grita Baixada (FGB) sees itself as an association of social movements with a common interest in human rights, social justice and a democratised security policy in the Baixada Fluminense. Since 2012, the forum has been active against organised crime and groups of contract killers, who are often linked to political actors and the police. Their violent acts are primarily directed against the black population and disagreeable politicians.

Currently, the FGB is preparing actions to commemorate the 'Baixada Massacre' of 2005, when 29 people were murdered by military police organised in a terrorist group. In addition, cestas básicas are distributed in cooperation with relatives of victims of violence and grassroots political projects for youth, LGBTQI+, women and black people are promoted. Work is also being done to document cases of enforced disappearances and to mobilise for the implementation of municipal guidelines on human rights in the city of Nova Iguaçu, initiated by the FGB.

Hintergrund

Betroffen sind u.a.

Museu Vivo do São Bento
