Makoko residents have been displaced because of government demolitions. Children are sleeping on wooden debris on top of water and die as a consequence. People have lost everything, please help them find an interim solution while figuring out a solution.
My name is Dr Nura Ali, I have done my PhD on urban planning and development in Makoko, Lagos (https://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/id/eprint/10205510/).
My long-standing research partner, Mr Idowu Gowon, lives in Makoko and is a Tradtitional Healthcare worker and Environmentalist and he has been reporting how the demolitions are affecting his community. While there is a lot of disinformation spreading, his videos and pictures show extreme distress and a level of violence that hurts an already marginalised community.
Mr Gowon and I have collaborated and organised an exhibition in the past, with proceedings going to an orphanage in Makoko. He is also a pastor and works with the church to distribute food, clothes, water.
All donations will be distributed by Gowon to those who are in most need and displaced by the demolitions. Gowon will also send a report of the distribution of donations which will be made public.
