Description

Protests of the 1st of October We are a group of Iraqis, who were forced to leave the country because of the political situation. We have been observing the decay from a distance for years. Now, it is time to take action. We cannot stand still any longer. This is our attempt to help our people. The Iraqi pepople are protesting since years because of appaling local infrastructure. There is poor access to electricity, clean water and health services. The unemployment rate is extremely high. There is no perspective for young people. The country suffers from a corrupt government. Thats why throughout the last few months there have been demonstrations all over the country. The last demonstration is a consequence of the protests, which occured throughout the whole of Irak in 2011 and in Bassra 2018, in an attempt to make the government take positive action. All the protests were due to social and economical reasons and because of the peoples dissatisfaction with the government and its way of ruling. Corruption is found within every single state institution. Even before the 1st of October 2019 there have been different protests in various places in Irak carried out by students fighting for job opportunities. But instead of trying to start a dialogue and solve the problem, the government reacted with extreme measures e.g. launching boiling water at them, arresting them and brutaly hiting them. Other people who so far hadn't been involved were moved by this convultion and started speaking up, taking the side of the students. People were dissapointed and angry about the governments actions and other states started to support the thus far little movement. The new wave of protest is unique beaucse of two reasons: The current protest movement has no leader. Al Sadr, a powerful politician and religious leader, had taken lead over the protest movement until the 1st of October. Changing the real cause of the protests to benefit his own political agenda. The protesters common aim is to overthrow the current government. Despite the extreme violence and opression exercised through the authorities and their armed forces, which have caused more than 600 deaths, 3000 injured, hundreds of arrested and kidnapped since the demonstrations started, the protests remained peaceful. In order to help the movement keep up their peaceful way, they need support in form of medical supplies, drinking water, food and clothing (particularly in winter time, they need thick blankets and warm clothing). The protesters are sleeping in the street at the main spots of protest, in popular squares such al Al-Tahrir Square in Baghdad, so they need theses supplies to keep them going. We want to help these young people in their difficult quest to achieve their dream of a democratic home where freedom of speech is accepted, where the different religions can live with each other side by side in harmony and without radical ideologies. Thats why we ask you, yours friends, family and neighbours to help. Every little bit counts! We are in touch with one of the earliest protesters, Ali H. who already took part in the early movment in 2011. He sends us the current fundamental needs and is our direct connection to the movement. He will make sure that the money will be invested appropriately. He will send us proof of the correct expenditure to make sure there is good transparency.
