In the heart of The Gambia, young people are leading a movement to protect the planet, sustain our heritage, and empower our communities.
Background
Founded in 2020, Kaira Kafoo (meaning Peace Organization) is a youth-led community organization based in Wulli BarrowKunda, Upper River Region, The Gambia. We believe that peace begins with our own communities. What began as a small group with a big dream has grown into a powerful movement across multiple villages for women's empowerment, healthcare, education, and climate action.
What We Do
Over the past decades, we have been feeling the strong impact of global warming. Every year, our land receives less rainfall, which has had a significant impact on our seasonal farming. We believe that empowering people and protecting the environment go hand in hand. This is why each year, we organize community-centered programs that create lasting impact.
π³ Tree Planting for Climate Action
Every year, our goal is to plant and care for 2000 trees. This helps our communities fight the harsh effects of global warming while restoring the beauty and balance of our environment. Youths and elders come together for this two-day activity, planting hope for generations to come.
β½ Youth Football Tournament
Before our annual festival, we organize a football tournament that brings together young people from surrounding villages. More than just a game, it is meant to celebrate our unity, teamwork, and peace.
π Annual Cultural Festival Celebrating Our Heritage
Every December, we host our two-day cultural festival, where villages gather to showcase their rich traditions, music, dance, and storytelling. Our dedicated volunteers and youths organize the festival activities in order to bring our communities across different villages together to share and celebrate our culture and share our history. This yearβs festival will be held from December 26th to 27th, 2025.

Kaira Kafoo also helps women farmers by providing seedlings, water pumps, and gardening materials, enabling them to grow food for their families. Since our villages don't have a market, community gardens play a central role in providing for our daily consumption needs. We also assist children - especially young girls - to stay in school and access healthcare.
