Thomas will zurück ins Leben

ich heiße Susanne Fiedler und wohne im südhessischen Groß-Bieberau. Der frühe Abend des 4. Juli 2023 hat das Leben meiner gesamten Familie von einer Sekunde zur nächsten zutiefst erschüttert.

Mein Mann Thomas, 58, und ich fuhren mit den Fahrrädern (beide mit Helm) zu einer Familienfeier ca. fünf Kilometer entfernt. Thomas geriet auf abschüssiger Strecke mit dem Vorderrad in einen zugewucherten Drainage-Graben, verlor die Kontrolle über das Fahrrad, stürzte und prallte mit dem Kopf mit voller Wucht auf ein aus der Erde ragendes Abflussrohr.

Der Rettungshubschrauber brachte ihn nach Darmstadt in die Klinik. Der Aufenthalt auf der Intensivstation dauerte bis zum 14. September 2023. Mehrere mehrstündige Operationen später die Diagnose im Ärztejargon: „Hochquerschnittgelähmt inkomplett ab C 4, komplett ab C 6.“ Thomas ist ab dem 6. Halswirbel vollständig gelähmt.

Die Therapien laufen, Thomas hat zweimal täglich Physio- und Ergotherapie. Es besteht die Hoffnung, dass er trotz stark eingeschränkter Handfunktion wieder selbstständig wird essen können. Fest steht aber auch: Der Rollstuhl wird ihn für den Rest seines Lebens begleiten.

Wir bewohnen eine kleine Doppelhaushälfte, Baujahr 1924. Hier wollen wir auch bleiben, denn das ist unser Zuhause. Wir müssen nun aber zahlreiche Umbaumaßnahmen vornehmen.

Zugang zum Haus, Bad, Toilette, Küche, Treppen – die Aufzählung alles Notwendigen würde den Rahmen sprengen. Neben einem Plattform-Lift – Thomas Rumpfmuskulatur ist zu instabil, um von einem Sessel-Lift zum nächsten umzusitzen – brauchen wir automatische Türöffnungsmechanismen, damit Thomas selbstständig ins Haus kommen kann. Wir brauchen ein Fahrzeug mit geeigneter Rampe bzw. Hebebühne.

Auch wenn wir planen, manches in gebrauchtem Zustand anzuschaffen, übersteigt der Bedarf – trotz Fördermöglichkeiten - bei Weitem unsere finanziellen Möglichkeiten. Thomas arbeitet als Anlagenführer im Müllheizkraftwerk Darmstadt. Ich bin Heilerziehungspflegerin im Betreuten Wohnen mit im Alltag eingeschränkten Menschen.

Wer uns bei unserem Kampf zurück in ein einigermaßen geordnetes Leben unterstützen möchte, der ist herzlich dazu eingeladen.

Thomas Wants to Get Back to Life

My name is Susanne Fiedler and I live in Groß-Bieberau in Germany. The early evening of July 4, 2023, shook my entire family's life to the core in the blink of an eye.

My husband Thomas, 58, and I were riding our bikes (both wearing helmets) to a family gathering about five kilometers away. Thomas crashed his front wheel into an overgrown drainage ditch on a steep slope, lost control of the bike, fell and hit his head with full force on a drainage pipe sticking out of the ground.

The rescue helicopter took him to hospital in the city of Darmstadt. His stay in the intensive care unit lasted until September 14, 2023. Following several operations lasting many hours, the diagnosis was given: "High-section paralysis incomplete from C 4, complete from C 6." Thomas is completely paralyzed from the sixth cervical vertebra.

Therapies are ongoing. Thomas has physiotherapy and occupational therapy twice a day. There is hope that he will be able to eat independently again despite his severely restricted hand function. But one thing is certain: he will be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

We live in a small semi-detached house built in 1924 and we want to stay here, because it is our home. However, we now have to make a lot of alterations.

Access to the house, bathroom, toilet, kitchen, stairs - it would go beyond the scope of this article to list everything we need. In addition to a platform lift, Thomas's trunk muscles are too unstable to move from one chair lift to the next, we need automatic door opening mechanisms so that Thomas can get into the house on his own. We also require a vehicle with a suitable ramp or lifting platform.

Even though we are planning to buy some things second-hand, the need is far beyond our financial means - despite funding opportunities. Thomas works as a plant operator at the Darmstadt waste-to-energy plant. I am a curative education nurse in assisted living with people who are restricted in their everyday lives.
