From Hussein / Manager NDOTO NDOTO IN ACTION VISUAL THINKING TRAINING In the Arusha District, primary school enrolment rates are above 95% with near gender parity; however, less than 40% of students pass the primary school leaving exam. Following the introduction of free fee primary education for all children by the Tanzanian Government in 2013, there has been a large increase in primary school enrolments. However, this has not led to increased learning and performance. The Tanzanian school system has been unable to put much emphasis on visual thinking training to teachers to enhance the easy and simple way of pupils to understand different topic matters seem to be difficult to deliver. Visuals like symbols, maps, graphs and tables, dagrams, illustrations and photos are very important to be used in learning processes simply because they give learners the ability to understand lessons easily. NDOTO IN ACTION AND PARTNERS SCHOOLS Ndoto In Action is working with 9 public primary schools in rural communities in Arusha region in Tanzania. Our schools are found in 3 wards of Nduruma, Mlangarini and Terati where the most of the residents are Maasai tribe. The Maasai tribe are the pastoralists in nature who care most about their cattle than the education of their children. NIA is working hard to help the communities to have a positive attitude to the education of their children which now seems to be fruitful due to the good participation of community members in the projects we implement in their school. The Reality of Visual Thinking in Tanzanian schools Despite its importance, Visual thinking is not well known in Tanzanian schools. In the school context, they compared visual thinking with teaching aids. There are not many studies done on the impacts of visual thinking teaching methods to the learners. Instead, there are many studies showing the impact of teaching aids to the students. The efforts need to be increased to push Visual thinking to help many students to be benefited with visual thinking training. How Ndoto in Action project addresses this problem: The objective of NIA broader Education Program is to achieve improved teaching and learning conditions in government schools in Tanzania, thereby increasing the number of trained teachers about Visual thinking will assure the increase of student’s ability in comprehending and understanding of topics in the class. Why Visual Thinking is important. Visual thinking is creating alternative modes of communication for people when they want to make a speech, using language, and other communication needs. Visuals also can help to improve understanding, avoid frustration, and other opportunities to interact with others. Visual learning helps students to understand concepts easily due to the fact it stimulates images and affects their cognitive capabilities. In fact, research shows that we can process visuals much faster than text. However, in education, visual learning helps students to develop visual thinking, which is a learning style whereby the learners come to understand and retain information better by associating ideas, words and concepts with images. Teacher training and professional development NIA is looking forward to adding Teachers' training and professional development as a component in developing education in our partner schools through visual thinking approach. We intend to equip at least 18 teachers from our partner schools with solid knowledge about visual thinking. These teachers will be a bridge to transfer that knowledge to more than 5000 students in their schools. The expected outcomes of the Teacher Training on Visual Thinking Project are: Increased number of teachers using visual thinking techniques in the school to help students to understand sessions. Increased teacher's confidence to meet the diverse needs of their students in using visual thinking. Improved teaching competency leading toIncreased academic performance of students and transition rate of students from primary school to secondary school due to the teaching of visual thinking competency Ich glaube es ist es wert!
