Für das Recht auf eine wissenschaftlich Auseinandersetzung mit der palästinensischen Geschichte an der Universität Freiburg

Wir protestieren gegen die Entscheidung der Universität Freiburg, die Ausstellung "Die Nakba: Flucht und Vertreibung der Palästinenser 1948" nicht zuzulassen und damit eine fundierte, wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit palästinensischer Geschichte und Leid zu verhindern. Diese Verweigerung steht exemplarisch für ein tieferliegendes strukturelles Problem: die systematische Ausblendung palästinensischer Perspektiven im akademischen Raum auch und gerade dort, wo Wissenschaft, Pluralität und Weltoffenheit Leitprinzipien sein sollten.

Nachdem die Universität Freiburg unseren Antrag auf Zulassung der Nakba-Ausstellung abgelehnt hat, trotz der Unterstützung zahlreicher Wissenschaftler*innen, Studierender und Engagierter sowie mehrfacher Gespräche mit der Leitung der Universität und Universitätsbibliothek, sehen wir uns gezwungen, rechtlich gegen diese Entscheidung vorzugehen. Unsere mittlerweile beim Verwaltungsgerichtshof Baden-Württemberg anhängige Klage zielt darauf ab, die Universität zur Genehmigung der Ausstellung und zur Bereitstellung geeigneter Räumlichkeiten zu verpflichten. Das Verfahren ist mit erheblichen Kosten für anwaltliche Vertretung und Gerichtsauslagen verbunden.

Öffentliche Aufklärung als Teil unseres Protests

Am 15. Mai 2025, dem 77. Jahrestag der Nakba, haben wir, als Zeichen des Protests, der Aufklärung und der öffentlichen Meinungsäußerung, einen Informationsstand mit einer Präsentation der Nakba-Ausstellung auf dem Platz der Universität in Freiburg organisiert. Diese Aktion war Teil unseres Engagements für die Sichtbarmachung palästinensischer Geschichte im öffentlichen Raum.

Warum Ihre Unterstützung entscheidend ist

Unsere juristische Auseinandersetzung betrifft weit mehr als einen Einzelfall: Sie ist ein Präzedenzfall für die Verteidigung der Wissenschaftsfreiheit, der geschichtlichen Aufarbeitung und der antirassistischen Bildungsarbeit an deutschen Hochschulen. Die Ablehnung der Nakba-Ausstellung durch die Universität steht sinnbildlich für eine tiefgreifende Asymmetrie im öffentlichen und akademischen Diskurs zu Israel-Palästina, eine Asymmetrie, die wissenschaftlichen Standards ebenso widerspricht wie grundlegenden Prinzipien demokratischer Öffentlichkeit.

Appeal for donations: Support our lawsuit for freedom of expression and academic freedom

For the right to a scientifically examination of Palestinian history at the University of Freiburg

We are protesting against the University of Freiburg's decision not to allow the exhibition "The Nakba: The Flight and Expulsion of the Palestinians in 1948" to take place, thereby preventing a well-founded, academic examination of Palestinian history and suffering. This suffering began before 1948 with the violent expulsion of the Palestinians and has continued over the last few decades, culminating in the catastrophic situation today. The university's refusal is thus exemplary of a deeper structural problem: the founding of the state of Israel was associated with immense Palestinian suffering from the outset, but this was meant to be ignored or suppressed, especially in Germany. With increasing violence by Israeli governments and settler groups against the Palestinian population, there has also been a growing tendency in Germany to look the other way and ignore the suffering of the Palestinians. Palestinian perspectives are systematically ignored in the public, media and academic spheres. However, it is particularly alarming to see this phenomenon manifest in university spaces, where academic knowledge, plurality and a willingness to engage in discourse should be guiding principles.

After the University of Freiburg rejected our application for permission of the Nakba exhibition, despite the support of numerous academics, students and committed individuals as well as multiple discussions with the management of the university and university library, we feel compelled to take legal action against this decision. Our lawsuit, which is now pending at the Administrative Court of Baden-Württemberg, aims to oblige the university to allow the exhibition and provide suitable space. The proceedings are associated with considerable costs for legal representation and court expenses.

Public education as part of our protest

On 15 May 2025, the 77th anniversary of the Nakba, we organized an information stand with a presentation of the Nakba exhibition on the university square in Freiburg as a sign of protest, education and public expression. This action was part of our commitment to making Palestinian history visible in the public space.

Our legal dispute concerns far more than an individual case: it is a precedent for the defense of academic freedom, historical reappraisal and anti-racist educational work at German universities. The university's rejection of the Nakba exhibition is emblematic of a profound asymmetry in the public and academic discourse on Israel-Palestine, an asymmetry that contradicts academic standards as well as fundamental principles of democratic public discourse.
