Help Beirut Now!
On Tuesday 04 August 2020 at 18:08 local time, the Lebanese capital Beirut was hit by the most severe explosions in its history. These occurred at the centrally located port. According to official information, about 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate were stored in a warehouse there. The exact cause of the explosion is still unknown, but the consequences are catastrophic. At least 135 people died and about 5000 were injured. About 300,000 people lost their homes. Beirut is in shock. Whole districts have been destroyed, glass panes shattered up to 30 km away. The explosion was felt as far away as Cyprus and was so enormous that high-rise buildings were destroyed and cars smashed.
This disaster of the highest degree hits the country at its historically weakest moment. Lebanon is currently experiencing a critical national crisis and the worst economic crisis in its history - all that in the midst of a global pandemic. Tens of thousands have lost their jobs in recent months and the local currency is currently experiencing hyperinflation.
In order to help people on the ground as quickly and easily as possible, we would like to set up an emergency fund. With this fund, we aim to help primarily individuals with particularly difficult fates and smaller NGOs. Our focus lies especially on refugees, foreign workers and domestic workers, women, queer people and families who have lost everything. The aim is to help people as quickly and simply as possible so that they can act autonomously.
Every donation counts!
