Street Dogs Mexico – Giving Abandoned and Mistreated Dogs a Better Life
My name is Sabrina, I’m 37 years old, originally from Germany, and I’ve been living in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, for the past 10 years – a place that many would call paradise. But over time, I came to see another side of this paradise: a heartbreaking number of stray, abandoned, and mistreated dogs on the streets.
During the pandemic, I founded Street Dogs Mexico, a project that has become my true heart’s mission. What started as a personal initiative has now grown into a continuous, active support system for the municipal dog shelter in Playa del Carmen, in close collaboration with our amazing volunteer group Voluntarios Perrunos.
The shelter currently houses around 140 dogs. While the basic conditions are acceptable, thanks to limited support from the local government covering food, water, and shelter, there is still a long way to go in terms of proper medical care, enrichment, and comfort for the animals. Many of these dogs were rescued from horrific conditions – starvation, abuse, neglect. And although they now have a roof over their heads, they still desperately need medical attention, love, and a chance at a better life.
Thanks to the tireless dedication of Voluntarios Perrunos, every dog gets a daily walk 🐾, socialisation 🧑🤝🧑🐕, and a little love ❤️. Still, it’s a constant struggle for survival.
Street Dogs Mexico is designed to generate donations from around the world to give these animals a second chance at life. With your support, we can provide:
- Urgently needed medicines, vaccines, tests, and deworming treatments
- Nutritional food for malnourished dogs
- Surgeries and medical procedures for the injured and sick
- Comfortable dog beds so the animals don’t have to sleep on hard floor
- Fans, which we have already purchased and installed, to keep the shelter cooler during the hot months
- Sun shades in front of the cages to protect the dogs from the harsh sun and provide much-needed shade throughout the day
Every single donation goes directly to the dogs. I personally handle each purchase in small amounts to ensure transparency and immediate impact. I keep all supporters updated with photos, videos, and breakdowns of what their generosity has made possible. Regular updates, behind-the-scenes videos, and every single receipt showing how donations are spent are shared on our Instagram and Facebook pages.
